Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell has defended Formula 1’s 2026 technical regulations following sharp criticism from Max Verstappen, who described the new rules as “anti-racing” and compared them to “Formula E on steroids.”

From 2026, Formula 1 power units will undergo a radical overhaul. The MGU-H will be removed, fully sustainable fuels introduced, and power output split evenly between the internal combustion engine and significantly enhanced electrical systems. Electrical deployment will rise to approximately 350 kW, up from 120 kW in 2025. The regulations were also instrumental in attracting manufacturers such as Audi to launch a full works programme, with Ford and Honda entering either as technical partners or full power unit suppliers.

The shift places greater emphasis on energy management, increasing the strategic and technical demands on drivers during deployment and recovery phases. Verstappen has argued that such changes risk compromising racing quality. Russell, however, highlighted the broader industrial and political context behind the regulatory direction.

“It is the ultimate goal to have the fastest possible cars, but as with anything in life, you can’t tick every single box,” Russell told media, including RacingNews365.

He explained that the strong push toward electrification within the European Union played a significant role in shaping the 2026 framework, particularly in securing Audi’s commitment to the championship.

“There was a huge push on EVs from the EU, and that was a big part of Audi coming in. There has to be that consideration. There’s more at stake than just outright speed.”

Russell also referenced the evolving demographic of Formula 1’s audience, suggesting that expectations differ between traditional enthusiasts and newer fans introduced through digital platforms and documentary series.

“We all love the V10s, the V8s, the loud noise. But some people in the grandstands might quite like being able to have a conversation while watching the race. You can’t please everybody.”

He concluded with a subtle response to Verstappen’s remarks, reiterating that adaptation is inherent to elite competition.

“At the end of the day, I just want to win. Every driver wants the best and most enjoyable car to drive, but this is the reality we’re in.”

The 2026 regulations represent a strategic inflection point for Formula 1, balancing performance ambitions with sustainability objectives and manufacturer engagement. Their implementation is expected to reshape both competitive dynamics and the long-term technical identity of the world championship.
