Nearly three months after the Monaco Grand Prix, the result of Formula 1's most prestigious race is still not definitive. The hearing, which took place last Wednesday, lasted the entire day, indicating the complexity of the legal arguments and the wider implications for F1. Both teams have portrayed the events in Monaco as setting a dangerous precedent. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella spoke of a 'double intent' behind the appeal, extending beyond the points lost in both championships.
Stella emphasized concerns about fairness for all competitors, noting that the penalty removal introduces significant elements of concern. He suggested that the case could go into technical aspects of how pit limiter speed was calculated, but at a high level, it's about the principle that needs to be clarified. The fear is that drivers and teams might be encouraged not to serve time penalties on track, but instead challenge them after the chequered flag.
In Monaco, Oscar Piastri and George Russell were among those who paid the price. Russell unsuccessfully attempted to serve his time penalty, incurring an additional drive-through penalty, leaving him without points and with no opportunity to do anything about it afterwards. Mercedes explored options but found none.
Gasly, who has been handed Hadjar's trophy, still doesn't know whether he can keep it. The ICA's decision will determine that, but it will take time. As the wait continues, fans and teams can only hope for clarity soon.
