Frederic Vasseur has responded strongly to comments from Toto Wolff about Ferrari’s continuous stream of upgrades during the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Ferrari team principal believes Wolff’s remarks pointed towards an insinuation that the Italian team could be breaching the cost cap.
Ferrari introduced its first major package at the Miami Grand Prix before following with another update in Barcelona. According to the official upgrade submissions, Ferrari has declared 32 different changes so far this season, compared with 17 for Mercedes.
Wolff had stated that he was surprised Ferrari could continue bringing major updates to its car. He argued that Formula 1 teams are constrained by the cost cap, making a high volume of new parts increasingly difficult to sustain as the season develops.

“We are a little bit surprised that Ferrari can throw these huge updates at the car in the way they do. In my opinion, they need to be running out of cost cap money soon, because we cannot do that,” Wolff said.
That drew a firm response from Vasseur. The Ferrari boss described the comment from Mercedes as ironic, suggesting that Ferrari’s development work was being interpreted differently from similar progress by rival teams.
“When Red Bull or Mercedes are developing, they are geniuses. But when we are developing, we are cheating,” Vasseur said.
Vasseur insisted Ferrari had not brought more parts than Red Bull or another rival in a way that should be exaggerated. He also explained that some items listed as upgrades in FIA documents are modifications to existing components rather than entirely new major packages.
“You have to calm down. We did not bring more parts than Red Bull or another team, and I do not know if it was a joke,” he said.
When asked directly whether he felt Wolff was accusing Ferrari of cheating, Vasseur replied that if someone believes a team has overshot the cost cap, then the discussion moves in that direction.
The issue is sensitive because Formula 1’s cost cap limits team spending, while the early phase of the 2026 regulations creates greater scope for performance gains through development. In that context, every aerodynamic, chassis and performance-related update can have a significant competitive effect.
Vasseur believes the discussion around upgrade volume is starting to be taken out of proportion. Ferrari must now protect its development momentum without escalating political tension with its rivals, while Mercedes will continue watching whether Ferrari’s aggressive update strategy can be sustained into the later phase of the season.
