Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has predicted that Formula 1 will experience greater performance convergence during the 2026 season, despite an initially wider competitive spread under the new technical regulations.
The introduction of the 2026 rules package is widely expected to create early disparities in performance as teams interpret the framework differently. Historically, however, regulatory cycles have shown that leading teams eventually encounter diminishing returns, while those starting further back benefit from larger development margins.
A recent example came under the ground-effect era, where Williams progressed from finishing last in 2022 with just eight points to securing fifth in the 2025 constructors’ standings with 137 points and two podium finishes in the final year of the cycle.

Vasseur believes the current financial and aerodynamic governance structure — notably the cost cap and Aerodynamic Testing Restrictions (ATR) — accelerates that convergence effect. The sliding scale of wind tunnel allocation, which grants more development time to lower-ranked teams, is viewed as a key mechanism for in-season recovery.
“I don’t have a clear explanation,” Vasseur told media including RacingNews365 when asked why leading teams continue to retain an advantage despite the cost cap and ATR.
“The convergence of performance will arrive, but it will arrive after seasons and seasons.
“If you look at last year, it was probably the best season in terms of close competition, but it was also after five years of the same regulations, and probably this year, the gap will be a bit bigger.
“But we’ll have some convergence, and I am sure that during the season, you will have a team catch up who are today at the back, and they could be even faster.
“You also have the allowance of wind tunnel time, which is making a difference during the season.
“I am sure that even if you start with different potential and lap-time, we will have convergence quite soon.”
With an entirely new technical platform set to reshape the competitive order in 2026, development rate will be decisive. The balance between financial discipline, aerodynamic testing allocation and efficient upgrade cycles is expected to determine whether Vasseur’s projection of mid-season convergence materialises before the championship narrative stabilises.
