Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Franco Colapinto received a major penalty during the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix 2026 at Albert Park, Melbourne, after being found to have breached the starting procedure at the beginning of the race.
The Alpine driver was handed a stop-go penalty, significantly damaging his chances of fighting for points in the season-opening round. Colapinto was the only driver penalised for a starting procedure infringement during the first race held under the new Formula 1 power unit regulations.
Colapinto had originally qualified 15th on the grid. However, after serving the stop-go penalty, he was forced to pit and rejoin the race at the back of the field, leaving him well behind the main pack of cars.
The 2026 Australian Grand Prix had already seen drama before the race officially began. Local favourite Oscar Piastri crashed during the reconnaissance lap on his way to the grid, eliminating the McLaren driver from his home event before the formation lap.
Another driver who failed to start the race was Nico Hulkenberg, after his Audi encountered a technical issue while positioned on the grid shortly before the start.
Further drama followed during the race when Isack Hadjar of Red Bull Racing became the first retirement on lap 11 due to a technical failure.
With multiple incidents unfolding from the pre-race phase through the opening laps, the Australian Grand Prix 2026 quickly developed into a chaotic and strategically complex contest at the Albert Park street circuit.
