Formula 1, Sportrik Media - FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has issued an official statement following the escalating conflict in the Middle East, which has created uncertainty around upcoming rounds of the Formula 1 and FIA World Endurance Championship.
Missile strikes have been reported across multiple Gulf states after military action involving the United States and Israel against Iran triggered regional retaliation. Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia have all been affected, leading to widespread airspace closures and airport shutdowns.
The motorsport impact has already been felt, with a two-day tyre development test by Pirelli in Bahrain cancelled on security grounds. Airspace restrictions have also resulted in personnel from Pirelli, as well as employees from McLaren and Mercedes, being temporarily stranded in the region.
The WEC season is scheduled to begin in Qatar later this month, while Formula 1 is set to race in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia in April. Both championship promoters and the FIA are closely monitoring developments as security assessments continue.
In his official statement, Ben Sulayem called for calm and stability.
“As president of the FIA, my thoughts are with all those affected by the recent events in the Middle East. We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and stand with the families and communities impacted.
“At this moment of uncertainty, we hope for calm, safety, and a swift return to stability. Dialogue and the protection of civilians must remain priorities.
“We are in close contact with our Member Clubs, championship promoters, teams, and colleagues on the ground as we monitor developments carefully and responsibly.
“Safety and well-being will guide our decisions as we assess the forthcoming events scheduled there for the FIA World Endurance Championship and the FIA Formula One World Championship.
“Our organisation is built on unity and shared purpose. That unity matters now more than ever.”
With key events in the Middle East approaching in the coming weeks, any final decisions regarding race operations will depend on the evolving security situation. The FIA has reiterated that the safety of competitors, personnel and fans remains the overriding priority in its evaluation process.
