FIA Explains Reduced Lewis Hamilton Spa Penalty

Lewis Hamilton received only a five-second penalty for his opening-lap collision with George Russell at the Belgian Grand Prix because the stewards identified several mitigating circumstances.

Russell attempted to overtake around the outside approaching Turn 5 at Les Combes and had established sufficient overlap to be entitled to racing room. Hamilton remained on the inside but suffered understeer and made contact with the right-hand side of Russell’s car with his left-front wheel.

The collision sent Russell spinning into the gravel, where his Mercedes became beached and forced him to retire. Hamilton was found wholly responsible for the incident and served the five-second penalty during his only pit stop.

The stewards explained that Russell remained within the available racing room, while Hamilton was unable to maintain sufficient separation. However, Hamilton had recognised Russell’s presence, attempted to leave space and applied corrective steering in an effort to avoid contact.

The FIA also determined that the collision resulted from a loss of front-end grip rather than an aggressive or deliberate manoeuvre. The reduced grip and compressed racing conditions of the opening lap were included as additional mitigating factors.

For those reasons, the stewards selected a five-second penalty instead of the standard 10-second sanction. Hamilton and Russell both considered the contact a racing incident, although the official decision still placed full responsibility on Hamilton.

Hamilton served the penalty without losing his opportunity to finish near the front and crossed the line in fourth place. His final classification remained subject to a separate post-race investigation over an alleged unsafe release.

The ruling demonstrated that full responsibility does not automatically determine the severity of a penalty. The nature of the mistake, the driver’s attempt to avoid contact and the conditions on the opening lap all contributed to the reduced sanction at Spa-Francorchamps.
