Fernando Alonso Says F1 2027 Future Depends on Regulations

Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Fernando Alonso has insisted that his decision over continuing in Formula 1 for 2027 will not be determined by the performance of Aston Martin’s major upgrade at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Aston Martin has endured a difficult 2026 season and has frequently operated near the rear of the field. Unlike several rivals that introduced updates gradually, the team elected to combine its technical changes into one substantial package scheduled to debut at the Hungaroring.

The arrival of the package coincides with the period in which Alonso is considering his future. The two-time world champion had previously stated that he would make a decision during the summer break following the Hungarian Grand Prix.

However, Alonso rejected the suggestion that the success or failure of the latest upgrade would become the decisive factor. He believes Aston Martin’s performance throughout the current season does not reflect the true potential of the team’s structure and resources.

“Nothing. My decision is not about the performance of this year. We started the season on the wrong foot and I cannot base my decision for next year on a performance that is not realistic,” Alonso said.

Alonso believes Aston Martin’s capabilities are considerably greater than the results seen on track during 2026. For that reason, he does not want to use short-term performance as the basis for deciding whether to continue his career with the team.

The more important factor is the direction of Formula 1’s regulations. Alonso has previously questioned the enjoyment of driving the latest generation of cars, particularly at high-speed circuits, and indicated that the technical character of the 2027 machinery will influence his decision.

The FIA has already confirmed adjustments for next season, including a move away from the 50:50 power split between the combustion engine and battery, with a greater contribution from the internal combustion element.

“My decision for next year is more about the rules. Driving these cars in places like Belgium or Silverstone is not what I am dreaming of for my future,” Alonso added.

The statement places the regulations at the centre of Alonso’s considerations heading into the summer break. Aston Martin’s upgrade remains important for the team’s development, but the Spaniard’s future will depend more heavily on whether the 2027 Formula 1 cars can provide the driving experience he wants.
