The new Max Verstappen contract with Red Bull was widely seen as closing the Formula 1 driver market. However, Fernando Alonso's decision on his future remains a major unanswered question.
In the past two weeks, several seats for the 2027 season have been filled. Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon extended their Williams contracts, while Franco Colapinto was retained by Alpine. Four vacancies have closed, leaving Alonso as the biggest name yet to commit.
The 45-year-old Spaniard is still weighing whether to continue in F1 or retire. His contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of this year, and he previously suggested a decision would come around the summer.
However, when asked at the Dutch Grand Prix, Alonso admitted he has no deadline. "I don't have any. I just came from holiday, so I will see in the next days or weeks or months," he said.
Alonso insisted Aston Martin's performance will not influence his choice. "I will be with this team in one role or another for the long term. Sitting with Lawrence and Adrian, the team's need is for me to drive. I will consider. I will be happy if I can be more valuable in another position," he stated.
"But I need to race. I need adrenaline. I am a competitor. Challenges are in my head: winning Dakar, trying Indy 500 again, or whatever. Winning a third F1 title is the ultimate dream, even if it takes time to achieve that performance," Alonso added.
All signs point to Alonso staying for at least one more year, keeping Aston Martin unchanged. Meanwhile, Liam Lawson's impressive performance as a stand-in for Isack Hadjar at Red Bull could give the team a selection headache for 2027.
Lawson has been strong at Racing Bulls and is expected to keep his seat. However, Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov, who leads the F2 standings, also deserves consideration for promotion. It is a good problem for Red Bull to have, given the wealth of promising talent.
