Fernandez Returns with Yamaha V4 for Malaysian MotoGP Wild-Card

MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Augusto Fernandez makes a highly anticipated return to MotoGP as a wild-card with the Yamaha V4 prototype at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang. Consequently, this appearance marks a critical step in Yamaha’s development for the 2026 season. Furthermore, Fernandez expressed his excitement, stating he has “missed the V4 so much” since its notable debut at Misano.

This event marks Fernandez’s seventh race this season, following three substitute appearances for Miguel Oliveira at Pramac Racing and three wild-card entries with Yamaha. At Misano, Fernandez’s V4 debut secured 14th place despite technical challenges, showcasing its potential. However, Fabio Quartararo noted a lack of progress in key areas like rear grip, while Alex Rins and Jack Miller were more optimistic, recording lap times 0.6-0.9 seconds slower than the Inline4 machine.

The primary goal in Malaysia is to enhance the V4’s engine performance, which lagged in top speed during the Misano test. Therefore, Yamaha, guided by experts like Massimo Meregalli, is focused on refining the prototype’s competitiveness. Fernandez stated, “I’m thrilled to be back racing. I’ve missed the V4, and I’m eager to see what we can achieve this weekend.” Nevertheless, he emphasized that the main objective is preparing the bike for next season.

Despite significant investment in the V4 project, Yamaha has not yet confirmed its replacement of the Inline4 engine. Consequently, the bike’s performance in Sepang and Valencia will be pivotal in determining its future.

Fernandez brings strong credentials to Sepang, having finished fourth in Moto2 and achieving a best MotoGP result of tenth with Tech3 KTM last season. However, addressing Yamaha’s rear grip weakness remains a key challenge. Additionally, Quartararo’s recent pole position at Phillip Island, followed by an 11th-place finish, highlights the need for improved race pace.

From an expertise standpoint, Sportrik Media, with its deep insight into MotoGP dynamics, views the V4 project as a strategic move to rival teams like Ducati and Aprilia. Nevertheless, success depends on consistent technical advancements.

Following Sepang, Fernandez and the V4 will race in Valencia, with a post-season test for the main riders. Therefore, the Malaysian Grand Prix will serve as a key benchmark for Yamaha’s progress. Furthermore, Sportrik Media hopes Yamaha can overcome technical hurdles, ensuring the V4 becomes a competitive cornerstone for the upcoming season. Thus, MotoGP continues to be a platform for innovation and fierce competition.
