Drama unfolded at Phillip Island as Fabio Di Giannantonio admitted he nearly suffered a disastrous crash due to fierce wind gusts while attempting to signal rookie Diogo Moreira during a intense battle in the 2026 Australian Grand Prix sprint race.

The VR46 rider was caught off guard by a sudden gust on the opening lap, which initially caused him to tumble down the order. However, the Italian rider mounted an impressive recovery charge to finish third, successfully completing a dominant Ducati 1-2-3 lockout in the 13-lap sprint.

During his charge through the field, Di Giannantonio found himself locked in a fierce scrap with LCR Honda newcomer Diogo Moreira. The intense duel prompted the experienced Ducati star to attempt a tactical communication on track to prevent both riders from losing valuable time to the leading pack.

Speaking in a behind-the-scenes video published by the official MotoGP website, the Italian rider detailed the terrifying moment when he tried to gesture to the Honda rider to stay behind him, only to be caught out by the notorious Phillip Island winds.

He explained that taking his hands off the handlebars to communicate nearly threw him off the bike completely. Despite having superior straight-line speed, the attempt to coordinate nearly ended in disaster due to the unpredictable weather conditions.

Looking ahead at what could have been in a full-distance grand prix, Di Giannantonio expressed confidence in his late-race pace. He believed he could have closed the gap to the Marquez brothers if the race laps were extended.

Nevertheless, he acknowledged that Marc Marquez was likely managing his race pace from the front after seeing crucial updates on the pit boards. The strategic management ensured a fascinating battle throughout the afternoon sprint session.
