The immense promise Ferrari displayed throughout the practice sessions at the 2026 United States Grand Prix evaporated during a tense and ultimately frustrating qualifying hour in Austin. Having commanded the timesheets in every single practice outing, the Scuderia found themselves severely lacking when it mattered most in Q3.
Early momentum suggested a major pole position threat, with Charles Leclerc topping both Friday sessions and Lewis Hamilton leading FP3 after Leclerc's fastest effort was deleted. The Italian outfit looked primed to duel Red Bull's Max Verstappen for the ultimate grid spot under the Texas sun.
However, the competitive landscape shifted rapidly as Mercedes emerged as a dominant force. Kimi Antonelli delivered a stellar opening lap in Q3 that ultimately secured pole position over Verstappen. Meanwhile, Leclerc could manage no better than fourth, with Hamilton slotting into fifth on the starting grid as Ferrari's outright pace plateaued alarmingly.

According to Motorsport.com, the slump boiled down to two critical elements: straight-line speed deficits and an inability to bring the Pirelli tyres into their optimal operating window for the decisive pole shoot-out. While the chassis excelled in low-speed sections and high-speed directional changes, it had no answer for the escalating pace of its rivals.
Leclerc did not hide his disappointment after climbing out of the cockpit, explaining that a mere drop of one or two degrees in track temperature ruined his tyre warm-up phase on the out-lap. The Monegasque driver stressed that the team must urgently dissect why their qualifying tyre preparation remains so hyper-sensitive compared to their competitors.
