F1 Spanish GP 2026 Starting Grid: Norris on Pole, Stroll P22

Lando Norris secured pole position for the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix after a dominant qualifying session. The McLaren driver locked in the top spot, leaving his rivals to fight for positions behind him. Meanwhile, Aston Martin faced a bitter reality: Lance Stroll will start from the very back of the grid due to an engine component penalty.

The front row will be an all-McLaren and Mercedes affair. Kimi Antonelli, the sensational Mercedes rookie, qualified second and is ready to apply pressure from the moment the lights go out. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) will start fourth, right behind Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) in third. This is one of the most intriguing grids of the season, with three different teams occupying the top two rows.

In the second row, George Russell (Mercedes) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) will line up fifth and sixth. Both are known for their aggressive moves into Turn 1, so early contact is a real possibility. Oscar Piastri (McLaren) will start seventh after failing to replicate his teammate's brilliance, while Liam Lawson (Red Bull) completes the fourth row, showing growing confidence in the RB22.

Surprises came from the midfield teams. Franco Colapinto (Alpine) and Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) broke into the top ten, while the Audi duo of Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto will start 11th and 12th. This is a positive sign for Audi in its second season. Esteban Ocon (Haas) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine) will line up on the fourth row.

Stroll's penalty is a heavy blow for Aston Martin. The Canadian had to change several power unit components beyond the allowed allocation, automatically sending him to the back. He will start 22nd, alongside Oliver Bearman (Haas) in 21st. Fernando Alonso, Stroll's teammate, could only manage 18th, indicating Aston Martin still struggles to find optimal performance at the Barcelona circuit.

With this grid, the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix promises a fierce battle from Lap 1. Norris has a golden opportunity to break away, but Antonelli and Verstappen will not sit idle. Tyre strategy and degradation management will be key, especially at a circuit known for punishing front tyres. Don't miss the action of the world's elite drivers, only on Sportrik Media.
