The modern landscape of Formula 1 could have looked drastically different if Christian Horner had accepted a sensational covert approach to lead the Silver Arrows back in December 2012. The former Milton Keynes team boss has shared the remarkable back story regarding secret negotiations that took place at the height of his squad's initial championship dominance.
Details of this monumental near-miss emerge from upcoming autobiographical memoirs scheduled for publication in October 2026. According to paddock excerpts, the 52-year-old manager was completely taken aback when a legendary three-time world champion unexpectedly showed up on his driveway during the Christmas break immediately following Sebastian Vettel securing consecutive drivers' titles.
The visitor was none other than Niki Lauda, operating in his capacity as non-executive chairman of the newly established Brackley outfit. The iconic Austrian figure arrived with a mission to lure the championship-winning principal away from his established base by dangling extraordinary financial packages.
Recalling the direct conversation in his upcoming book, Horner noted the Austrian's blunt assessment during the recruitment pitch. Red Bull could never match the vast sums that the competing manufacturer was fully prepared to put on the table to secure his managerial services.
Despite the immense financial temptation, the proposal was ultimately rejected out of deep-rooted loyalty and respect toward founding owner Dietrich Mateschitz. That steadfast commitment was immediately vindicated by further championship success the following year, paving the way for Toto Wolff to step into the role in Brackley instead.
