F1 2027 Rules: FIA Closes Loophole on Tech Transfers to Non-F1 Projects

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has ratified a crucial operational regulation update for the Formula 1 2027 season by introducing a brand-new article titled 'Physical and IT Segregation between F1 and Non-F1 Activities'. This decisive step targets a long-standing gray area concerning the flow of knowledge and expertise between elite motorsport operations and external corporate projects, including supercar development, WEC, Formula E, and nautical ventures.

Previously, teams faced no restrictions regarding hiring highly specialized engineers for external projects, allowing them to indirectly exploit valuable know-how for the aerodynamic and mechanical development of their grand prix cars. Furthermore, high-tech infrastructure such as wind tunnels, simulators, and test benches lacked transparent tracking, while staff moved freely between divisions.

To eradicate potential workarounds regarding budget cap limitations and hidden technology utilization, the governing body introduced an 11-page addition to the 2027 operational regulations. The framework demands rigorous physical and digital segregation, completely prohibiting personnel from crossing paths between F1 and non-F1 departments.

Federation officials will enforce compliance through physical facility inspections and IT forensic audits. Teams must operate with total honesty, meaning covert messaging channels, unauthorized data downloads to external drives, and the use of intermediaries for information sharing are strictly forbidden.

Under the updated rules, F1 and non-F1 workspaces must occupy exclusively dedicated, separate rooms. Shared high-tech facilities like wind tunnels and simulators can never be utilized simultaneously, and operational support staff must log all maintenance activities in a dedicated register with a three-year traceability requirement.
