Formula 1 has unveiled its provisional 2027 calendar, and the biggest shock comes from Monaco. The iconic street circuit will host a Sprint Race for the first time ever, a bold move that has immediately sparked debate in the paddock.
The 2027 season will feature 24 races, with a record 10 Sprint weekends. Monaco joins the Sprint roster on June 4-6, marking the first time the narrow, overtaking-challenged circuit will host the shortened format. It's a clear attempt by F1 to inject extra excitement into a weekend traditionally associated with glitz and glamour.
The season kicks off in Bahrain on March 12-14, a week after Ramadan ends. Sprints will also be held in Sakhir, Australia (April 2-4), Japan (April 9-11), Canada (May 21-23), Silverstone (July 2-4), Italy (September 3-5), Brazil (November 5-7), Qatar (December 3-5), and Abu Dhabi (December 10-12). Canada and Silverstone retain their Sprint status, while Portimao returns on June 20, a week after the Le Mans 24 Hours.
Montreal will once again take place before Monaco, but crucially avoids clashing with the Indy500 on May 30. Turkey and its popular Istanbul circuit also return on October 3, part of a triple-header with Azerbaijan and Singapore. The return of Portimao and Istanbul signals F1's intent to expand its reach in Europe.
Despite the cancellation of Middle Eastern races this year, the Gulf region remains on the 2027 schedule. Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are all included, with Saudi Arabia on March 19-21. This underscores F1's commitment to the region.
With new regulations featuring tweaked hybrid engines, 2027 promises to be one of the most competitive seasons yet. The Monaco Sprint will be a real test for drivers to prove overtaking is still possible on the Principality's narrow streets. Will it be a masterstroke or a backfire? Only time will tell.
