F1 2026 Controversy: Why Kimi Antonelli Escaped Track Limits Penalty in Singapore
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Antonelli was pinged four times for track limits in Singapore

Formula 1 championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli avoided a time penalty despite racking up four track limits violations during the Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay circuit over 62 laps.

Under official F1 regulations, drivers are permitted up to three track limits transgressions before race control displays the black and white warning flag. A fourth infraction automatically triggers a five-second time penalty, while a fifth violation results in a ten-second penalty.

During Sunday's race, the Italian driver was flagged four times in total, with two infractions occurring at Turn 2, one at Turn 19, and the final breach recorded at Turn 7. This sparked widespread confusion in the paddock as to why the runaway championship leader faced no sporting sanction.

While initial reports claimed Mercedes successfully contested one of the infractions, the Silver Arrows denied the rumor when approached by Crash.net. Furthermore, governing body the FIA has yet to issue an official explanation despite requests for clarification.

Investigations into Article B1.8.5 of the 2026 F1 regulations suggest that stewards exercised leniency because one of Antonelli's excursions was a direct result of brake issues on his W17 machine, determining that he gained no lasting advantage by leaving the asphalt.

Nevertheless, the lack of a penalty raises questions regarding regulatory consistency and transparency, drawing comparisons to previous strict rulings applied to other drivers facing mechanical gremlins such as brake failures in past events.
