Toyota driver Elfyn Evans has strengthened his grip on the overall lead of Rally Japan after recording his second consecutive fastest time in Special Stage 3 (SS3). Evans' dominant run has extended his advantage over second-placed teammate Oliver Solberg to 17.7 seconds.
Technically, Evans' success continues to be driven by the advantage of his road position. As the championship leader, Evans benefits from starting first on Friday's asphalt stages, allowing him to traverse the track in its cleanest state. By avoiding the accumulation of dirt and debris dragged onto the surface by subsequent cars, Evans is able to maintain maximum traction and a more stable racing rhythm.
Sébastien Ogier delivered a highly competitive performance in SS3, conceding only 1.7 seconds to Evans. This result moves Ogier up to third overall, now trailing Solberg by just half a second. Ogier has already begun a "psychological battle," stating his intention to put maximum pressure on Evans to reclaim the lead.

Conversely, Hyundai's Thierry Neuville is struggling to keep pace, losing 4.9 seconds to Evans on this stage. Neuville remains in fourth place but is now nearly 30 seconds adrift of the lead. This significant gap forces Neuville into a high-risk strategy for the remaining stages to close the deficit.
Sami Pajari holds fifth place, trailing Neuville by 3.6 seconds, followed by Takamoto Katsuta in sixth. Pajari noted that while his pace improved compared to the previous stage, the conditions remained tricky. This confirms that adapting to unpredictable grip levels is the most critical variable for the drivers in Japan.
With three more special stages remaining on Friday, Toyota's strategy is to protect Evans' lead while continuing to optimize the performance of their other drivers. The primary technical focus will be tire management to ensure competitiveness through to Sunday, particularly in managing rubber degradation against variable asphalt temperatures.
