Christian Horner Opens Up About The Brutal Reality Behind His Red Bull F1 Exit

Former Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner has finally broken his silence regarding the sudden timing of his departure from the Milton Keynes-based outfit in July 2025. Speaking publicly in New York at the Autosport Business Exchange, the 52-year-old Briton candidly described the final moments of his two-decade tenure as abrupt and quite brutal.

During an on-stage conversation with CBS News anchor Errol Barnett, Horner reflected on his glittering career in Formula 1 alongside notable industry figures like seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and former F1 CEO Chase Carey. When asked if the decision came as a complete shock, Horner admitted that the writing had been on the wall following the tragic passing of company founder Dietrich Mateschitz at the end of 2022, as reported by Motorsport.com.

"Yes and no. I think the timing of it was pretty abrupt and quite brutal, but I felt that things were changing. Nothing stays the same forever," Horner explained to the packed Manhattan Motorcars showroom audience, addressing motorsport leaders from around the globe.

Horner elaborated that Mateschitz was the ultimate power behind Red Bull who made all the major decisions independently. Attempting to replace a visionary of that magnitude proved impossible, and as the corporate group evolved, headquarters sought to exert tighter centralized control. This shift directly contrasted with the absolute autonomy that had fueled Red Bull Racing's immense success over the years.

Throughout his historic leadership journey in Milton Keynes, Horner oversaw dominant championship eras with drivers like Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel. While his chapter with the energy drink giant ultimately drew a close under stark circumstances, Horner acknowledged that shifting corporate pathways eventually rendered the split inevitable.
