Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Charles Leclerc of Ferrari believes the team’s best opportunity to challenge Mercedes in F1 2026 lies in maximising race starts and applying pressure during the opening laps.

Mercedes has dominated qualifying so far, locking out the front row at every grand prix and sprint through George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. However, both drivers have struggled off the line, creating opportunities for Ferrari to gain track position at the start.

Leclerc capitalised on this in Australia by taking the lead into the opening lap, while Lewis Hamilton did the same in both starts in China. Despite this, Mercedes’ superior race pace has consistently allowed it to recover positions and control the outcome of races.

In Japan, Leclerc again demonstrated Ferrari’s early-race strength by overtaking Russell following the safety car restart triggered by Oliver Bearman’s crash, subsequently holding position against the Mercedes driver.

“I don’t think it’s as close as maybe people think,” Leclerc said.

“Our only chance to stay with them is to annoy them in the first few laps.”

Leclerc emphasised the importance of creating “dirty air” for Mercedes, disrupting aerodynamic efficiency and limiting their ability to exploit their full pace. He noted that once Mercedes cars run in clean air, their performance advantage—estimated at four to five tenths per lap—becomes decisive.

“As soon as they get free air, they show their real pace. That’s still a significant advantage,” he added.

Ferrari continues to work on development upgrades aimed at reducing this gap, but Leclerc stressed the need for a measured and disciplined approach rather than overextending in response to Mercedes’ current advantage.

“We have some things in the pipeline. We need to focus on ourselves and not overdo it,” he explained.

With the championship entering a break before the next round, Ferrari has an opportunity to refine both its technical package and race execution strategies. The effectiveness of its strong starts as a tactical tool will be closely monitored as the season progresses, particularly in determining whether Ferrari can translate early-race gains into sustained challenges against Mercedes in the 2026 title fight.
