Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Charles Leclerc of Scuderia Ferrari has stated that his team can still place Mercedes under pressure in races, despite acknowledging a clear performance deficit at the start of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Ferrari has opened the campaign with competitive results, securing back-to-back podium finishes in Melbourne and Shanghai through Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. The SF-26 represents a step forward compared to its predecessor, particularly in energy deployment and early-race flexibility.
However, Mercedes’ W17 has emerged as the benchmark package. Across both qualifying and race distance, Ferrari has struggled to match the consistency and outright pace of the Brackley-based team, with the performance gap becoming more defined after the opening rounds.

Performance Gap Becoming Clearer
Charles Leclerc indicated that the Chinese Grand Prix provided a more accurate reflection of Ferrari’s competitive position. In that race, Kimi Antonelli finished over 25 seconds ahead of Hamilton and nearly 29 seconds clear of Leclerc, underlining the scale of the deficit.
“Yes,” Leclerc said. “I think now things are more in line. After testing, there were things that didn’t quite add up in the races. I didn’t understand why we were so close in Australia or in the sprint in China.”
“I was hoping we would never see this level of pace difference, but now it is clearer.”
Ferrari estimates the gap to Mercedes to be between three and five tenths of a second per lap in race trim. While Mercedes has suggested the margin may be smaller, race data points to a more significant difference over a full stint.
Early-Race Strength Remains Key
One of Ferrari’s key strengths has been its ability to challenge at the start of races. Both Leclerc and Hamilton have been able to apply immediate pressure on George Russell and Antonelli, occasionally taking the lead through aggressive energy management strategies.
This approach has allowed Ferrari to remain competitive in the opening laps, particularly when tyre performance is at its peak. However, maintaining that level of competitiveness over a full race distance has proven difficult, with Mercedes demonstrating superior consistency and tyre management.
“That doesn’t mean we cannot put them under pressure and into a difficult situation,” Leclerc explained.
“With the way these cars fight, it can still be very interesting.”
This dynamic highlights Ferrari’s capacity to influence race outcomes tactically, even if the overall pace deficit remains a limiting factor.
Development Pipeline Under Evaluation
To address the performance gap, Scuderia Ferrari is preparing a series of upgrades aimed at improving aerodynamic efficiency and long-run consistency. These developments are expected to be introduced over the coming rounds as the team seeks to close the gap to Mercedes.
However, Leclerc remains cautious regarding the potential impact of these updates relative to Mercedes’ current advantage.
“There are things in the pipeline,” he said.
“How much difference they will make when we compare ourselves to Mercedes, I don’t know.”
This uncertainty reflects the competitive nature of the current regulatory environment, where incremental gains can be decisive but are highly dependent on circuit characteristics and operational execution.
Championship Implications and Next Phase
With two rounds completed, Ferrari has established itself as a consistent podium contender but remains in a chasing position relative to Mercedes. The ability to convert competitive starts into sustained race performance will be critical in narrowing the gap.
Mercedes continues to lead both the drivers’ and constructors’ standings, supported by a combination of qualifying strength and race pace consistency. This places Ferrari under immediate pressure to accelerate its development trajectory.
Looking ahead, the Ferrari-Mercedes battle is expected to remain central to the championship narrative. Ferrari’s capacity to extract performance from upcoming upgrades, combined with strategic execution, will determine whether it can challenge more directly for victories as the 2026 Formula 1 season progresses.
