Carlos Sainz has urged Williams to reassess the FW48 concept and accelerate its upgrade programme after finishing only 12th at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. The result exposed a major weakness through medium- and high-speed corners, where insufficient downforce and the car's weight disadvantage prevented Sainz from mounting a realistic challenge for points.

Williams struggled throughout the weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, a venue widely regarded as one of the most complete tests of a Formula 1 car's aerodynamic performance. Despite eight other drivers encountering problems during the race, Sainz was still unable to break into the top 10. His 12th-place finish showed that Williams' difficulties were not simply the product of race circumstances but reflected fundamental limitations within the FW48 package.

Weight and Downforce Restrict the FW48

Sainz acknowledged that Williams had expected Barcelona to be one of its more difficult events. However, the scale of the deficit through medium- and high-speed corners exceeded the team's initial expectations. The car's continued weight disadvantage compromised direction changes, increased the load placed on the tyres, and reduced its efficiency when maintaining speed through long-radius corners.

The more significant concern, according to Sainz, was the FW48's overall lack of downforce. The car did not generate sufficient aerodynamic load to provide stable and consistent grip as cornering speeds increased. That forced the driver to reduce entry speed, delay the return to full throttle, and surrender time during the cornering phase that could not be recovered solely through straight-line performance.

"Looking back on it, I think it's been a bit more of a shock how far off we are in medium- and high-speed corners, partly due to weight, but even more importantly due to the downforce we have on the car," Sainz said. "It has been a realisation that we are very far from where we should be, where we targeted to be, or where we want to be."

Sainz Calls for an Accelerated Upgrade Programme

Barcelona's layout demonstrated that Williams does not yet possess the aerodynamic balance required to compete consistently at circuits dominated by medium- and high-speed corners. Compared with the packages operated by leading teams such as Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren, the FW48 requires a substantial increase in aerodynamic load without sacrificing the efficiency that supports its straight-line speed.

Set-up changes can only redistribute the car's balance rather than create a major increase in available downforce. Williams can alter ride height, suspension stiffness, or wing levels, but each adjustment introduces a compromise. Running more wing can increase cornering grip while adding drag, whereas a lower-downforce configuration risks making the car even less stable through fast sections.

Sainz has therefore called on the team to return to the development process and introduce new components as quickly as possible. "I think it's time to go back to the drawing board and start bringing more things to the car, because clearly, at a medium-speed track, we're very far behind," he said. His assessment places direct pressure on Williams' technical department to accelerate weight reduction and identify downforce gains that can be delivered without damaging the car's overall efficiency.

The conclusions drawn from Barcelona will provide an important reference for Williams' development programme ahead of the coming rounds. Until the FW48 gains more aerodynamic load and moves closer to its weight target, the team risks facing similar difficulties at circuits containing medium- and high-speed corners, regardless of race strategy or problems affecting its rivals.
