A major structural shake-up has hit Audi's Formula 1 engine development headquarters in Neuburg, Germany. The Ingolstadt-based manufacturer has officially announced the appointment of Thomas Fuhr as the new Chief Executive Officer to lead their power unit division ahead of the upcoming regulatory era.
The introduction of Thomas Fuhr into the leadership hierarchy is designed to fortify long-term project management. His arrival complements the existing team framework while allowing chief technical director Stefan Dreyer to concentrate fully on spearheading the technical development of Audi's Formula 1 power unit without distractions from day-to-day operational management, which will remain under the oversight of COO Christian Foyer.
As a seasoned industry veteran boasting over 30 years of relevant experience, Thomas Fuhr brings a wealth of automotive and engineering expertise. His impressive background includes serving as managing director of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains from 2009 to 2012, alongside holding senior executive roles at various prominent global manufacturing and engineering organizations before joining Audi's ambitious motorsport venture.

This unique blend of technical acumen and organizational leadership made Fuhr a prime target for Audi as the brand strives to make further competitive strides with its in-house power unit, which was built entirely from scratch at the Neuburg facility. Audi F1 CEO and team boss Mattia Binotto expressed strong confidence in the new structural addition.
As reported by Motorsport.com, Mattia Binotto stated, "We have built strong foundations in Neuburg, developing Audi’s first Formula 1 power unit from the ground up. As Thomas understands both the technical challenge and what it takes to build and lead high-performing teams, I am confident he will play a key role by further developing the team and its organisation to make us the best F1 manufacturer. I am very much looking forward to welcoming him to the team."
Meanwhile, Thomas Fuhr shared his excitement about stepping into the high-profile role to shape the German manufacturer's future on the global grand prix grid. "I am proud to join Audi’s Formula 1 project. The chance to help shape Audi’s future in the sport is what makes this opportunity so exciting. The team in Neuburg has developed an entirely new power unit and brought it to the track. I want to build on that work by bringing together expertise across the organization and creating the conditions for us to compete at the highest level," Fuhr remarked.
Reintroducing the CEO role within the engine division marks a strategic turning point for Audi's motorsport management. The executive position at the engine plant was previously dissolved at the start of 2025 following the departure of former CEO Adam Baker, with the management team now reinstating a dedicated chief executive structure to tackle the intense technological demands of premier single-seater racing.
