Mike Krack has expressed confidence that Aston Martin can deliver a competitive performance at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, following a positive step in drivability at Monza. The Silverstone-based squad remains in a phase of trial and error with its various upgrades, both on car and engine, and the race at the Temple of Speed was always expected to be a challenging weekend.
Despite a lackluster performance at Monza, Krack emphasized the importance of the progress made. "Well, I'm happy with the step that has been taken in Monza," he told media, including Motorsport Week, at the Madring ahead of its inaugural Grand Prix. "Drivability is a big subject. It's not only the engine, it's not only the chassis, it's really the combination of both. The downshift, the brakes, how is the tyre condition, what is the speed you have arrived, super clip, or whatever. So, there's a lot of elements playing into this."
Krack also highlighted that improved drivability provides crucial confidence, especially at a track with close walls like the Madring. "For a track like this one here, it's good to have that, because it gives confidence, and confidence is the only way where you can attack when the walls are so close," he added. He also mentioned that his Honda counterpart, Shintaro Orihara, would agree that drivability is never good enough and will continue to be improved.
This season, Aston Martin has shown fluctuating performance. After Fernando Alonso made it into Q2 in Hungary, he secured the team's best result of the season with a ninth-place finish in Zandvoort. However, Monza's fast characteristics were always going to challenge its work-in-progress Honda power unit, despite ADUO-assisted upgrades. Now, with the new Madring circuit, the team hopes to capitalize on the progress made.
Competition in the midfield is intensifying, and every small improvement can mean a significant difference in position. Aston Martin needs to maximize every race to score points and improve its position in the constructors' championship. The confidence shown by Krack indicates that the team has found the right development direction, particularly in terms of drivability, which is a key focus.
