Ash Sutton etched his name in history by claiming a record-breaking fifth BTCC Drivers' Championship with a stunning victory in Race 2 at Silverstone from 12th on the grid. The win moves him clear of Andy Rouse and Colin Turkington as the most successful driver in British Touring Car Championship history.
2026 has been an incredible season for the NAPA Racing UK driver, arguably one of the most dominant in series history. Clinching the title with four races to spare is a fitting reward. Starting from P12, Sutton surged to fourth by the end of lap three, also securing the fastest lap point he needed to become champion.
Up front, Tom Chilton made a superb start to take second, while Daryl De Leon also passed Mikey Doble, who suffered another poor start. Aiden Moffat took advantage to lead, but soon encountered Osamu Kawashima, who became the first lapped runner after just one full lap.
Sutton continued his charge. On lap five, he passed Chilton around the outside at Copse after using the overspeed out of Woodcote. Meanwhile, De Leon overtook Moffat into Brooklands. Sutton then hunted down De Leon and took the lead on lap nine with a superb dummy at Copse.
The battle behind remained intense. Adam Morgan, enjoying his best season to date, moved into second past De Leon on the Wellington Straight on lap 14. Charles Rainford also impressed, passing both Chilton and Moffat in one move, before finishing on the podium in third. Dan Cammish, who started 21st, broke into the top ten by lap 13 and continued to climb to seventh.
Track limit penalties were handed to Chris Smiley and Gordon Shedden, curtailing Smiley's charge towards a reverse grid spot. Nevertheless, Sutton drove a controlled and dominant race to the flag, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest in BTCC history.
With this fifth title, Sutton further strengthens his legacy in British touring car racing. His success this season has been about more than just speed; it's been about consistency and race craft. Attention now turns to the remainder of the season, where rivals will be eager to close the gap.
