Nicolo Bulega has officially secured the 2026 WorldSBK championship by winning Race 1 at the Italian Round in Cremona. This is his first title in the premier Superbike class, marking the peak of a dominant season.
Relentless Dominance
Bulega has been outstanding, taking 26 wins and 30 podiums from the 10 rounds held so far. The Italian also claimed nine pole positions this season and broke the record for consecutive poles with 10, a streak that began at Estoril in 2025. His consistency has been simply unmatched.
The Road to the Top
This title is Bulega's second in FIM World Championship competition after winning the 2023 World Supersport Championship. His performance that year earned him a step up to the factory Ducati team in WorldSBK for 2024. He made an immediate impact by winning his first race at Phillip Island and finished the season as runner-up, beating teammate Alvaro Bautista and finishing behind Toprak Razgatlioglu.
In 2025, Bulega again had to concede to Razgatlioglu. But with the Turkish star absent from the 2026 grid, Bulega was unstoppable. He has not finished lower than second all year. In fact, in fully dry races, Bulega has not finished below second since his rookie year, and only Razgatlioglu has managed to beat him.
Moving to MotoGP
Bulega's impressive performances have earned him a move to MotoGP with the VR46 team for 2027. He has been testing Ducati's new 850cc MotoGP bike throughout 2026, even arriving at Cremona with a shoulder injury from a crash in testing at Mugello. The preparation work has led several riders, most notably Pol Espargaro, to view Bulega as one of the favourites to win grands prix early next season.
After Razgatlioglu, Bulega becomes the second consecutive WorldSBK champion to move to MotoGP after over 15 years without such a move. The last before Razgatlioglu was Ben Spies, who made the transition after winning the 2009 World Superbike crown. Now, Bulega is ready to write a new chapter in grand prix racing.
