Josh Gomersall put an end to Alice Buckley's dominance at Winton with a commanding victory in the third race of the TA2 Muscle Car Series on Sunday. Driving the #32 Ford Mustang, Gomersall led from start to finish and crossed the line 3.6 seconds ahead of Buckley.
The race was dramatic from the outset. Buckley, who had been impressive with two pole positions and two wins on Saturday, jumped into the lead at the first corner. But Gomersall refused to back down. He used the outside line to muscle past Buckley at the tight Turn 2 switchback, taking the lead. From there, Gomersall controlled the race and steadily built a gap.
Behind them, battles raged. Ayce Buckley, driving the #96 Mustang and no relation to Alice, finished third to claim his first podium on debut. Tyler Cheney (#38 Camaro) and Tommy Smith (#116 Camaro) completed the top five.
Alice Buckley tried to apply pressure, but Gomersall's race pace proved too strong. "His pace was incredible," Alice said after the race. "I tried to close in, but he was so consistent."
The fight for third was intense. Ayce Buckley had to work hard to pass Smith, making contact on the exit of Turn 7. Cheney capitalised to move into fourth, but Ayce fought back and reclaimed the position at the final corner. "That was an intense race," Ayce said. "I'm thrilled to be on the podium on my first weekend."
Further back, Jackson Rice suffered a cruel fate. He lost traction at Turn 4 on the penultimate lap and, after contact with Joel Heinrich, spun into the infield, eventually finishing 14th. Heinrich himself had to settle for eighth after an earlier off-track excursion at Turn 5.
The result tightens the championship battle. Race 4 will take place on Sunday afternoon at 4:05pm AEST, broadcast live on Fox Sports, Kayo, and SBS.
