MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Aprilia Racing introduced a first-of-its-kind aerodynamic concept at the opening round of the 2026 MotoGP season in Thailand, marking a significant technical development ahead of the new campaign.

Reporting from The Race indicates that the RS-GP26 features a redesigned fairing incorporating twin front air intakes and corresponding exhaust outlets at the rear section of the bodywork — positioned where the rider’s arms rest when fully tucked on the straights. When the rider adopts a streamlined position, the arms effectively cover the outlets, altering airflow characteristics during high-speed sections.

The operational principle bears resemblance to the McLaren F-duct system used in Formula 1 in 2010, where airflow was redirected to stall the rear wing and reduce drag. In Aprilia’s case, the concept appears aimed at achieving a similar drag-reduction effect in a straight line. By modifying airflow when the outlets are covered, the system potentially alters pressure distribution across the fairing surfaces to decrease aerodynamic resistance.

While the precise airflow path remains undisclosed, The Race suggests the redirected air may exit through the side of the main fairing, potentially stalling the outer curved section designed to generate mid-corner downforce. Such a configuration would represent a calculated balance between straight-line efficiency and cornering load, key performance parameters under MotoGP’s tightly regulated aerodynamic framework.

The revised fairing debuted during the Sepang test and reappeared at the Buriram pre-season test but had largely gone unnoticed until the Thai Grand Prix weekend. Marco Bezzecchi used the updated configuration throughout Friday practice — a session he topped — indicating competitive confidence in the package.

Under MotoGP homologation rules, each rider is permitted one fairing update per season. An exception applies to Yamaha Factory Racing, whose tier-four concessions status allows two aerodynamic updates, although previous specifications must be discarded upon introduction of a new version. Should rival manufacturers pursue similar concepts, they would be required to homologate their own revised fairings within these regulatory constraints.
