Kimi Antonelli once again stole the spotlight at the Spanish Grand Prix. The young Italian secured another win despite brushing the wall at the challenging Madring circuit. However, for Toto Wolff and Mercedes, the victory came with a side of anxiety.
No Holds Barred
From the start, Antonelli showed signs of making everyone around him nervous. Benefiting from a virtual safety car on a track where overtaking is nearly impossible, all he had to do was keep it clean until the finish. But the 20-year-old couldn't resist flirting with the limits.
A comical moment unfolded. Mid-race, Antonelli suddenly called his race engineer, Pete Bonnington, in a panic. "Check the car!" he said. A confused Bonnington asked which corner. "No, I didn't touch any wall, but the steering feels weird..." Antonelli replied. Five laps later, he did tag the wall at Turn 7. "I touched the wall on the entry to Turn 7," he yelled.
Though the incident didn't ruin his race, it highlighted Antonelli's classic issue: dangerously flirting with track limits. Both his father, Marco, and team boss Toto Wolff admitted they've had to drum it into his head. "We joked, 'What an idiot!'. But that's just Kimi," Wolff said with a laugh. "The white lines, we had to drum it into his head that he shouldn't go over them. Even at Monza, he still went over the white lines and risked the car."
Speed Born from Carelessness
Wolff added that Antonelli's sometimes 'too cool' attitude is actually the source of his speed. "He had to hit the wall again because he wants to go fast. Sometimes for me, he's an inch too cool," he said. "He's causing us grey hair. But maybe he's like this, and maybe that's what's making him so quick."
The question is, will this no-holds-barred approach last when Antonelli starts thinking about the world championship? As the youngest driver ever in that position, the pressure will only mount. But Wolff is confident his protege won't lose focus. "I promise you he's not thinking about it," Wolff insisted. "The way this kid is able to compartmentalise and be the young kid and then get into the car and be the mature racing driver is incredible."
With his performance on the rise, Antonelli is clearly a serious threat to his rivals. But for Mercedes, managing this wild talent is a challenging task. They want to preserve his aggression while ensuring no unnecessary risks. One thing is certain: Kimi Antonelli will never let a race be boring.
For Mercedes, having a driver as fast and brave as Antonelli is both a dream and a test of patience. They must be ready for anything. But as long as the results are positive, perhaps the grey hairs are worth it.
