The Formula 1 paddock is facing a monumental emotional shift as Audi confirms that long-standing stalwart Beat Zehnder will officially depart from the Hinwil-based squad at the end of December 2026. After an astonishing 39 years of unwavering service, the veteran team figure—who most recently operated as the Director of Signature Programs & Operations—will step down amid a sweeping organizational restructure ahead of the upcoming 2027 season.

In an official statement released by the team, management paid glowing tribute to a man who has been the heartbeat of the organization for decades. Highlighting his profound impact on the factory floor and the pit lane, the team noted: "Beat war fur Hunderte von Teammitgliedern und Fahrern, die im Laufe der Jahre in Hinwil tatig waren, ein Mentor." His presence has shaped the careers of countless engineers, mechanics, and drivers who passed through the Swiss headquarters over the years.

Zehnder's remarkable journey in motorsport began back in 1988 when he was originally hired by team founder Peter Sauber to work as a mechanic within the sports car program. When the organization made its highly anticipated entry into Formula 1 in 1993, Zehnder transitioned seamlessly alongside them, eventually taking over the demanding role of team manager in 1994 and guiding race weekend operations through decades of technical evolution.

Throughout his extensive tenure, Zehnder experienced the absolute highest peaks and the most challenging valleys inherent to the pinnacle of motorsport without ever compromising his professional standards. The Audi statement further emphasized his enduring character: "Wahrend seiner Amtszeit erlebte er sowohl die Hohen als auch die Tiefen der Arbeit in einem so anspruchsvollen Sport, ohne dabei jemals seine Professionalitat, seinen unermudlichen Kampfgeist und seinen Siegeswillen zu verlieren." His final Grand Prix weekend acting directly as team manager came back at Abu Dhabi in 2024 before shifting focus to historical vehicle operations.

By the time his remarkable chapter closes in December 2026, Zehnder will have been an integral part of 36 World Sportscar Championship events and a staggering 601 Formula 1 Grands Prix under the Hinwil banner. As the organization prepares for a new era under the German manufacturer's full works entry, his legacy remains unmatched. "Wir danken ihm fur 39 Jahre herausragender Dienste und wunschen ihm fur die Zukunft alles Gute," concluded the team in a heartfelt farewell to an irreplaceable racing institution.
