Speculation regarding Valtteri Bottas' future in Formula 1 continues to intensify as the 2026 season draws to a close. The Finnish driver currently finds himself under intense scrutiny following the rise of Colton Herta as a formidable candidate to take over his seat at Cadillac for the 2027 season.
Herta, who recently secured the necessary FIA super licence points after a string of Free Practice 1 outings, has emerged as a genuine threat to Bottas' stability. Nevertheless, Bottas remains composed, expressing surprise at the level of noise surrounding his future. He maintains that the team has consistently expressed satisfaction with his performance throughout this debut campaign.
"I'm quite surprised about the amount of noise on that because I know what my situation is, and yeah, all I've heard is that the team has been happy with what I'm doing," Bottas told the media. He added that the final decision regarding his future still awaits approval from the team's board, yet he remains convinced that nothing has changed regarding his contract status.

The challenge for Bottas does not stem solely from Herta. Mercedes reserve driver Fred Vesti has also entered the frame following his impressive performance in Mexico. Vesti's existing ties to General Motors through his success in IMSA sports car racing have only added fuel to the fire within the Cadillac garage.
Addressing the potential of being dropped by the team, Bottas insisted that such a move would be highly irregular. "I agree. Yeah, it would be very odd. So that's why I don't think anything is going to change with my situation. Throughout the season, I have been following team instructions, even when I had to prioritize simply getting the car across the finish line," he stated.
For Bottas, the criticism from external observers often fails to grasp the bigger picture of the role he has been playing. He remains focused on his duties while awaiting final word from the management, who will ultimately dictate the direction of Cadillac's future on the F1 grid.
