Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel has openly suggested that Colton Herta may have underestimated the stark differences in the working environment when switching from IndyCar to Europe's premier feeder series. The American's bold career move in 2026, aimed at preparing for a future Formula 1 seat with the Cadillac F1 team, has so far failed to meet expectations as he currently sits 19th in the drivers' standings.
Having spent seven years as a frontrunner in America, Herta returned to European single-seaters to chase his ultimate motorsport dream. However, his maiden campaign has been plagued by performance drops and multiple costly crashes, leaving both the team and the Californian searching for answers throughout a difficult racing year.
Michel pointed directly to the high-pressure F2 weekend format as a primary hurdle for the Hitech driver. With only a brief 45-minute practice session and a 30-minute qualifying window, drivers have extremely limited track time to extract maximum performance from their machines—a deliberate design meant to simulate the unforgiving environment of Formula 1.
"It's been more difficult than what I thought it was going to be, because Colton Herta is a very strong driver, there's no doubt about that," Bruno Michel commented regarding the struggles. "He and we maybe underestimated the difference of working environment that we had compared to IndyCar teams, but I don't think it has to be settled as an example, and I really hope that he's going to finish the season in a high."
Despite earlier concerns regarding the remainder of the calendar, organizers have reaffirmed that the final rounds will proceed without cancellation. Looking ahead to his career trajectory, Herta has admitted he has little interest in a sophomore F2 campaign, though he remains open if it aligns with Cadillac's long-term development roadmap for his ultimate F1 graduation.
