Johann Zarco has been issued a financial penalty by the FIM MotoGP Stewards after conducting an unsafe practice start during the first free practice session of the French MotoGP at Le Mans. The LCR Honda rider was found in breach of specific technical protocols governing simulation starts, which officials categorized as potentially dangerous to other competitors on track.

Despite the administrative setback, Zarco demonstrated strong pace by ending the session in fourth position. Notably, he achieved his best lap time while utilizing a used tyre, indicating a positive trend in grip management and overall stability for the Honda RC16 at the Le Mans circuit. However, this performance was overshadowed by his conduct in the start area, which triggered a formal investigation by the race stewards.

The violation centered on a direct breach of the "Notice to All MotoGP Teams," which explicitly prohibits riders from stopping, moving forward, and then stopping again during a practice start. Technically, initiating a second attempt after a partial move is considered high-risk, as it creates a potential collision hazard for riders accelerating directly behind them. This action constitutes an infringement of Article 3.3.2.2 of the FIM Grand Prix World Championship Regulations.

From a technical perspective, practice starts are essential for riders to calibrate the clutch bite point and optimize power delivery to the rear wheel to minimize excessive wheelies or traction loss. However, these simulations must be executed in a single, linear motion. Zarco's failure to adhere to this sequential movement was viewed as a disregard for safety protocols designed to maintain order in the high-pressure environment of the starting grid.

The stewards imposed a fine of 1,000 Euros as the sole sanction for the incident. Because the violation occurred during a practice session and did not involve a racing incident during a competitive phase, no grid penalties or point deductions were applied. Consequently, Zarco’s aspirations to repeat his home victory from the previous year remain intact, provided he adheres to the strict regulatory framework for the remainder of the weekend.

In contrast, Luca Marini faced a different set of challenges during the same session. Although Marini recorded the fastest time using new tyres toward the end of FP1, he was unable to participate in the practice start period due to a technical malfunction. This mechanical failure deprived Marini of critical data regarding the RC16's initial launch characteristics at Le Mans, a deficit he will need to compensate for ahead of the race.

The combination of promising lap times and procedural errors underscores the volatile technical environment of the 2026 MotoGP season. For Honda, the priority remains balancing the machine's raw speed with operational discipline, ensuring that their riders maximize their potential without falling foul of the increasingly stringent FIM safety mandates.
