Fabio Quartararo and Yamaha have finally sat down to clear the air following the tension that arose after the Aragon MotoGP. Monster Yamaha team director Massimo Meregalli confirmed that a meeting took place before the first free practice session at Misano. Quartararo, who will move to Honda next season, had told French media that he no longer wanted to help develop Yamaha's V4 after being denied the chance to try the 2027 Pirelli tyres at the upcoming Austrian test.
Those comments sparked speculation about a rift between rider and team. However, upon arriving at Misano, Quartararo clarified: “We got a meeting together, everything was sorted out, and everything is pretty normal.” Meregalli also emphasised that the matter had been discussed openly. “I think Fabio understood the weight of his words after Aragon GP. We clarified everything yesterday when he arrived, and the most important thing is to work in the most professional way until the end of the year,” he told MotoGP pit lane reporter Jack Appleyard.
Meregalli added that the team would not change their way of working. “For us, what happened in Aragon is already part of the past, and we are really focused to try to just maximise what we can do from here to the end of the season. We will not change our way to work. As soon as we have updates, Fabio will have them. For us, it's our way to work. Also in the past, we have always worked in this way, and we will continue to finish this season in our way,” he stated.
Meregalli also explained Yamaha's reasoning for not allowing Quartararo to join the Austrian Pirelli test. “About the test in Austria, I think we were available to let our departing rider test the Pirellis if everybody were going to do that. At the end, it's not like this, and we fixed our plan in a different way,” he said. Yamaha is expected to field next year's Pramac line-up of Toprak Razgatlioglu and rookie Izan Guevara during the second 850cc/Pirelli test for MotoGP race riders.
Quartararo himself showed promising pace at Misano, finishing as the top Yamaha in ninth during FP1. This contrasts with Aragon where he finished last. Meanwhile, Yamaha's new factory team riders for next season, Jorge Martin and Ai Ogura, both currently at Aprilia, are also expected to miss the test.
The tension between Quartararo and Yamaha has been a talking point given his move to Honda at the end of the season. However, the meeting at Misano shows both parties' efforts to maintain professionalism. For Yamaha, maintaining a good relationship with a rider who has been the backbone of the team is crucial, especially as they transition to the V4 engine and Pirelli tyres era. Quartararo also seems to realise that his words could affect the team's atmosphere, and he chose to defuse the situation.
With a long season still ahead, Yamaha's focus is on developing the bike and maximising results. Quartararo's presence until the end of the year remains important for providing technical feedback, even though he will not be involved in long-term development. Meanwhile, Quartararo wants to end his Yamaha career on a positive note, despite the challenges on track. The improved relationship at least provides the stability the team needs ahead of the crucial upcoming rounds.
