After the long summer break, the FIA WEC roars back into action this weekend. Round five of the 2026 season takes place at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, with six hours of racing set to deliver high-stakes drama and strategic battles.
COTA, at 5.513 km and 20 corners, presents a distinctly different challenge compared to the high-speed demands of Le Mans or the tighter confines of Sao Paulo. It is the slowest venue on the WEC calendar in terms of average LMGT3 speed. Its combination of slow corners, technical sections, and substantial elevation changes places a premium on mechanical grip and chassis balance.
Despite a long back straight offering outright speed potential, its effectiveness is compromised by the slow exit from Turn 11 and the heavy braking zone into Turn 12. With a particularly high number of first and second-gear corners, teams will again focus on optimising mechanical balance. With relatively little time spent in fifth and sixth gears, the prevailing setup philosophy likely favours downforce and cornering performance over sacrificing grip for straight-line speed.

Braking performance will also be critical, though demands differ from Interlagos. COTA combines heavy braking zones with a wide variety of corners, especially in the infield section from Turns 13 to 19. Extensive kerb use adds emphasis on chassis compliance, while the circuit's notoriously demanding tyre and brake wear adds another layer to the six-hour contest. Hypercars can reach more than 315 km/h, underlining the contrast between slow technical sections and faster stretches.
After nearly two months away, the championship returns with the Hypercar title fight finely poised. Toyota leads the manufacturers' standings on 132 points, but BMW has closed to just five points behind after their victory at Sao Paulo. Kevin Magnussen, Raffaele Marciello, and Dries Vanthoor took the #15 BMW M Hybrid V8 to victory in Brazil, while Toyota endured a difficult weekend following Le Mans success.
COTA arrives at a crucial point in the season. With eight rounds on the 2026 calendar, Austin marks the beginning of the second half. After Texas, only three races remain to decide the titles. The battle is similarly close in LMGT3, where Corvette TF Sport leads the teams' standings after Le Mans, but only ten points separate third from ninth.
The weekend begins with two Friday practice sessions before qualifying and the race. All eyes will be on whether BMW can capitalise on momentum to overtake Toyota at the top, or if the Japanese manufacturer will extend their lead on home turf? This race is poised to be a pivotal turning point in the 2026 title fight.
