Max Verstappen is set to take a grid penalty before the end of the 2026 Formula 1 season after enduring power unit issues during Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying. The Red Bull driver could only manage eighth in Q3, a disappointing result after topping final practice.
The problems emerged in Q1, with Verstappen reporting a loss of at least half a second per lap compared to his teammate. The situation deteriorated in Q2 and Q3, with the internal combustion engine (ICE) failing to function properly. "In Q3 that engine was no longer working properly at all," Verstappen told Dutch media.
Ahead of the race, Red Bull fitted several new power unit components to Verstappen's car, including a fresh ICE, turbocharger, exhaust, and ancillary components. The FIA confirmed that the ICE, turbo, and exhaust are the final ones from his pool allocation. Consequently, a grid penalty is inevitable.
"There definitely has to be a penalty at some point," the four-time world champion stated. He expects the penalty to be applied in upcoming races, given that the new components in Baku are the last permitted under the regulations.
Other drivers have also faced power unit penalties. Andrea Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes served a grid penalty at the Italian Grand Prix and charged from 19th to win. Meanwhile, his teammate George Russell will take one when Mercedes introduces its ADUO upgrade. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was expected to take a penalty in Baku, but the team deferred it to another race.
For Verstappen and Red Bull, this issue adds complexity to the remainder of the season. The loss of performance due to a suboptimal power unit could affect their standings, especially if the grid penalty must be taken at a crucial race. The team must now strategize to minimise the impact while ensuring engine reliability until the end of the season.
