Aston Martin Formula 1 team has announced a major off-track development. American billionaire Robert Wood Johnson has officially acquired a minority stake in the Silverstone-based squad and has also been appointed as vice chairman of the board of directors.
Johnson, known as Woody, is no stranger to the world of sports and politics. The heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical empire owns the NFL's New York Jets and last year acquired a significant stake in English Premier League club Crystal Palace. He also served as US ambassador to the UK from 2017 to 2021 under Donald Trump's administration.
The decision was made by Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll to accelerate the team's commercial growth in the US market, which is increasingly important for F1 with the Miami and Austin Grands Prix. The team stressed that Johnson will not be involved in the team's day-to-day management.

"During my time as US Ambassador to the United Kingdom, I have developed a deep appreciation for Aston Martin's rich history, as well as Lawrence Stroll’s strategic vision and entrepreneurial spirit," Johnson said in an official statement. "I am excited to partner with him and contribute to the continued development of the team, with the ambition of building an organisation capable of competing at the very highest level of the sport."
Johnson also emphasized a shared commitment to growing F1's fanbase in the US. "We also share a commitment to growing the fanbase in the United States and introducing even more fans to the excitement of Formula 1," he added.
Lawrence Stroll welcomed Johnson's arrival. "I am extremely happy to welcome Woody to the Aston Martin family. His experience, passion and investment further strengthen our position as we enter the next phase of our competitive journey," Stroll said. "His deep appreciation for our brand, combined with his commitment to innovation and commercial opportunity, makes him an ideal partner as we look to the future."
This move comes at a pivotal time for Aston Martin, which is building a new factory and hiring top talent, including Adrian Newey as technical partner. Johnson's arrival could open doors to more US sponsors and partnerships.
With Johnson on board, Aston Martin is showing increasing ambition to become a major force in F1, both on and off the track. The combination of investment, business acumen, and political connections could be a powerful weapon for a team dreaming of winning the world championship.
