Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff has thrown his full support behind MotoGP's handling of the contentious Lusail weekend in Qatar, amid rider dissent and security concerns in the region.
The Qatar Grand Prix weekend arrived following a series of informal votes among riders regarding regional stability. While the majority of the grid ultimately traveled to compete, Yamaha notably sat out the event entirely due to company-wide travel restrictions.
The decision by Yamaha drew a firm response from series management, who emphasized that extensive consultations had taken place with local authorities, the circuit, and independent safety advisors before confirming the weekend schedule.

Amid varying stances from the riders—including Marc Marquez admitting he preferred to arrive and leave on the earliest possible flights—Toto Wolff defended the governing body's pragmatic approach when drawn on the topic during the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend.
“Stefano Domenicali and Mohammed Ben Sulayem have been pretty clear about the situation, that Formula 1 follows what international guidelines are, whether there are travel restrictions, airlines not flying, warnings in the region, and feedback from local governments,” Toto Wolff stated.
The Mercedes chief also questioned athletes wading into complex geopolitical matters simply to generate headlines, while reaffirming the simple choice available to competitors.
“If riders stand up who geopolitically know nothing about what's going on but have an audience that listens, that creates media value, but I would have done the same that MotoGP management has done. You want to ride or drive, go. If you don't want to, don't go. As simple as that,” he concluded.
