The 2025 MotoGP season is reaching its defining chapter for Marc Marquez. The Ducati rider remains in the title hunt, but the battle has become tougher than expected—Aprilia has stepped up, and his physical condition is still a work in progress. Ducati, however, is in no rush to make predictions. Davide Tardozzi, the team manager of the factory squad, has already set a timeline for when clarity will come.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo ahead of the Aragon GP, Tardozzi stated that Marquez’s true potential will only be measured after a brutal triple-header: Aragon, Misano, and Red Bull Ring. “We had to reach this point in September to know his level. We’ll see in the next two races. I think by the end of September, after Aragon where he won, plus Misano and Spielberg, we’ll see Marc’s level. I believe by the end of September we’ll know if we’re fighting for the title or not,” he explained.
Aprilia is no longer a surprise. Tardozzi admitted that the Noale factory had already shown strong form in the second half of last season. “After Sepang, we were convinced we were still a step ahead, but between Sepang and the Thailand tests, they made another leap. They did a great job. At that moment, I think they overtook us,” he said.
The two bikes have very different characters. Ducati excels in braking and acceleration when grip is high, while Aprilia extracts more from low-grip tracks. “There are circuits where Aprilia is superior, but there are others where we won, so clearly the Ducati was superior,” the Italian added.
Beyond performance, Tardozzi praised Marquez’s growth after his physical setbacks. “He has matured even more after the Indonesia crash because he went through a very tough time. It took years to recover from what happened in 2020, and the exact problem was only understood after Jerez, leading to another operation,” he said. He also highlighted the humility of the nine-time world champion: “The humility, being aware of who he is. Marc knows exactly who he is as a person and as a rider. That’s a trait only great champions have, because fast riders often need others to tell them they’re good. He already knows.”
Interestingly, Tardozzi dismissed any notion that Marquez is a problem for Francesco Bagnaia. The duo’s coexistence has been professional and even beneficial. “They are both professionals. There are no internal issues,” he said. Ducati’s focus now is to maintain harmony between its two stars and ensure no internal friction derails their championship hopes.
With three decisive rounds ahead, all eyes are on how Marquez responds to the physical and technical challenges. If he can be competitive at Aragon, Misano, and Spielberg, Ducati can start dreaming again. If not, they may need to shift focus to next season. One thing is certain: the end of September will be the turning point of this story.
