Chevrolet Camaro's dominance in Friday practice at The Bend has triggered a swift response from Supercars. After the Camaros swept all three sessions, the category has moved to reduce the maximum rear wing angle of the Chevrolet, effective from Practice 5.
The change comes after Chevrolet implemented a pre-event front-end tweak aimed at generating more downforce. The result was immediate, with Camaros outpacing the field, prompting Supercars to review data and take action to maintain competitive balance.
Supercars motorsport boss Tim Edwards confirmed the change in an email to teams on Friday morning. "Supercars have reviewed the data from all cars in yesterday's practice sessions and determined a change is required to the rear wing angle of the Chevrolet Camaro," it read.
The email stated that under clause 7.4 of the Technical Parity Regulations, the rear wing angle of the Camaro will be reduced by 0.3 degrees to a maximum of 8.4 degrees. The change will be in effect from the beginning of Practice 5 for the Air Touch 500 at The Bend.
This move is part of Supercars' ongoing efforts to maintain performance parity between the Camaro and its rival, the Ford Mustang. The Camaro has dominated much of the season, and this adjustment aims to level the playing field.
With the change, teams and drivers must quickly adapt, especially in finding the right setup for the remaining practice sessions and qualifying. The impact could be significant on car balance, particularly at The Bend's high-speed corners.
The decision also underscores Supercars' commitment to enforcing technical parity, even mid-event. Now, all eyes are on whether this change will be enough to alter the competitive landscape for the rest of the weekend.
