Ahead of the opening practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, home hero Sergio Perez was forced to miss a scheduled Fan Forum event after unexpectedly falling ill. This unfortunate setback certainly provides far from an ideal start to the weekend as the Mexican driver prepares to celebrate his milestone 300th Grand Prix start in front of his passionate home crowd.

Despite skipping media and fan duties on Thursday, team management expects the veteran racer to be fully fit to participate in both Free Practice 1 and Free Practice 2. The decision was strictly made to allow him maximum recovery time in his motorhome before strapping into the cockpit for the high-speed action.

A statement released by the team read: Checo Perez will unfortunately be unable to attend today’s Fan Forum at his home Grand Prix due to illness. Both he and the team apologize to all the fans who have come out to see him. Checo and the team has taken the decision to allow him additional time to rest and recover this morning, ahead of today’s on-track sessions.

To ease the operational load, teammate Valtteri Bottas stepped in to fulfill all media commitments and take part in the scheduled on-track sessions as planned. The team expressed sincere gratitude to their supporters for understanding the delicate situation as the garage prepares for a high-stakes weekend.

Perez is notably not the only competitor affected by physical exhaustion during the build-up to the Mexico Grand Prix, with Kimi Antonelli and Bottas similarly missing their media obligations earlier in the week due to health issues. Fortunately, all affected drivers are anticipated to take part in Friday practice without restrictions.

Weighing in on the wider paddock discussion regarding physical strain, championship leader Max Verstappen pointed directly at the relentless modern F1 calendar as the root cause of these recurring illnesses. The heavy demands of consecutive race weekends leave drivers with virtually zero downtime.

For me, the toughest bit is that you can't really go home in between to be back with the family, Verstappen explained when discussing the physical toll. That, for me, is nowadays something that I do not really enjoy about triple-headers.
