Sergio Perez Insists He Has No Say in Cadillac F1 2027 Teammate Decision

Sergio Perez has firmly insisted that he will have no say or influence in deciding who will partner him at the Cadillac Formula 1 team for the 2027 season. The Mexican driver's future has been secured through a fresh contract running until 2029, announced ahead of his home race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez—a milestone weekend that also marks his 300th F1 race appearance following a year on the sidelines after his departure from Red Bull.

Meanwhile, the future of his current teammate Valtteri Bottas remains far from certain, even though the Finnish driver has denied his seat with the debutant squad is in danger. Team principal Marcin Budkowski previously declined to confirm whether the incumbent lineup would remain unchanged for next season when speaking at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, fueling ongoing paddock speculation regarding the team's long-term driver roster.

As part of the team's evaluation process, reserve driver Colton Herta is set to run in FP1 in place of Bottas in Mexico. This outing is vital for Herta to register the necessary FIA superlicence points required to race in Formula 1, following his switch from IndyCar to Formula 2 with Hitech this year, utilizing official practice sessions to help meet the regulatory threshold.

Addressing Herta's contribution during the team's maiden campaign, Perez praised the youngster's work ethic and technical feedback. He noted that while jumping into FP1 sessions makes it difficult to immediately showcase top-tier speed, the increasing simulator time and practice mileage are starting to reveal the American driver's true pace on track.

Reiterating his stance on staying out of management decisions, Perez emphasized that final roster choices rest entirely with the team leadership. He stated, "I don't want to, either, because that's not my decision. That's why we have someone like Marcin, who will be looking at all the data and information, and he will ultimately make that decision based on what he thinks is best for the future of the team." With crucial months ahead for rapid technical evolution, Perez remains fully focused on driving duties.
