Sergio Perez is set to cement his legacy in motorsport history by becoming just the seventh Formula 1 driver ever to reach 300 grand prix starts. This milestone carries extra significance as the Mexican driver achieves his triple-century right in front of his home crowd during the race weekend in Mexico City, making him the first driver to hit this prestigious landmark on home soil.

The seasoned charger currently has 299 starts to his name, though his total grand prix entries will actually reach 304. His so-called missing races include the 2011 Monaco and Canadian Grands Prix, where he withdrew following a heavy qualifying shunt in Monte Carlo. Mechanical misfortune also struck at the 2014 Malaysian Grand Prix due to a gearbox failure, while a positive COVID-19 test forced him to sit out the 20th round of the 2020 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

By joining this elite club, Perez follows in the illustrious footsteps of Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen, Rubens Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, and Jenson Button. Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel famously entered 300 grands prix and started the formation lap for 300 races, but officially completed 299 and a half after suffering a terminal engine failure on the grid ahead of the 2016 Bahrain Grand Prix.

Simultaneously, Lewis Hamilton is rapidly closing in on a mind-boggling 400 grand prix entries, with Mexico City marking his 399th race weekend. Since making his electrifying debut back in 2007, the British superstar has only missed a single race—the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix due to COVID-19—an unforgettable event famously won by Sergio Perez himself.
