Formula E, Sportrik Media - Porsche has officially unveiled its Gen4 development car, the 975 RSE, ahead of the next era of Formula E, with Pascal Wehrlein describing it as a “real eye-opener.”

The German manufacturer revealed the car prior to the official Gen4 launch at Circuit Paul Ricard, where the first public test is scheduled to take place. Porsche will run alongside Jaguar and Stellantis, represented under the Opel brand, as Formula E prepares for a major performance step with its next-generation machinery.

The Gen4 regulations are expected to deliver lap times comparable to—or potentially faster than—current Formula 2 cars, significantly closing the historical performance gap. This marks a major milestone for electric single-seaters since the championship’s debut in 2014.

“The GEN4 shows how far electric vehicles have evolved,” said Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport.

“When the championship started in 2014, drivers needed two cars per race. One battery wasn’t enough to complete the distance. Those days are long gone.”

“Since 2024, we have been developing a race car that can match the level of Formula 2. Electric vehicles are not just catching up—they are increasingly demonstrating their strengths, both on track and on the road.”

According to Porsche data, the Gen4 car is expected to reach a top speed of approximately 335 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 1.8 seconds. This would make it the fastest-accelerating single-seater in the world, while matching the top-end performance of Formula 2 machinery.

Team principal Florian Modlinger emphasised that efficiency remains central to the development philosophy, aligning with Formula E’s relevance to road car technology.

“The concept remains the same: the regulations push us to maximise efficiency in every area, because that is what makes us relevant for the road,” he explained.

“The racing should become even more exciting, as the new cars are significantly faster. The acceleration is impressive, and we expect top speeds of up to 335 km/h.”

Porsche’s Gen4 development programme has progressed steadily, with both Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Muller actively involved in testing. From the first rollout in November last year through early April, the Weissach-based team has completed over 1,800 kilometres of running.

Under Gen4 regulations, manufacturers take on expanded responsibilities, including the development of the electric motor, inverter, gearbox, differential, driveshafts, cooling systems, and rear suspension components. For the first time, they must also produce the DC/DC converter, brake-by-wire systems, advanced electronics, and control units for hydraulic differentials.

Porsche has until October to finalise development ahead of FIA homologation, with its expected customer team, Cupra, set to participate in early testing phases.

From a driver perspective, the 975 RSE represents both a technical challenge and an opportunity for a more aggressive driving style. Pascal Wehrlein highlighted the car’s performance and visual appeal.

“The new Porsche 975 RSE is a really cool race car,” he said.

“The GEN4 is extremely fast and great fun to drive. I believe it will be a real eye-opener for many fans and critics. I also like the design—the aerodynamics make it look uncompromising.”

Meanwhile, Nico Muller underlined the step forward in driving dynamics, particularly in qualifying conditions.

“The 975 RSE and its competitors are a massive step forward for the sport,” he said.

“I’m a big fan of how aggressively you can drive it. Especially in qualifying, when everyone is pushing to the limit, it should be spectacular—particularly due to the strong acceleration out of corners.”

With significant gains in performance, technical complexity, and manufacturer involvement, the Gen4 era is set to redefine Formula E’s competitive landscape. The introduction of the 975 RSE marks a critical step in that evolution, with broader implications for both motorsport and electric vehicle development heading into the next phase of the championship.
