Alex Palou stands on the brink of history. The Spanish driver from Chip Ganassi Racing could secure his fifth IndyCar title, and fourth in a row, this weekend on the streets of Washington. The 'Freedom 250 Grand Prix' is not just another race—it's a celebration of America's 250th anniversary of independence, an event strongly backed by President Donald Trump.
With four rounds remaining, Palou's lead at the top of the standings looks increasingly comfortable. He missed the podium in the last race at Markham, but his closest rival, Kyle Kirkwood, crashed out after hitting the barriers. That result stretched their gap to 133 points, with David Malukas a further 137 points behind in third.
Palou's chances of wrapping up the title in Washington are very real. He only needs to gain 29 more points over Kirkwood to reach a 162-point advantage—an insurmountable margin with only two races left. The scenario is simple: if Palou wins and Kirkwood finishes ninth or worse, the title party can start early.

But if that moment doesn't happen in the US capital, there are still two more opportunities. Next week features a doubleheader at the Milwaukee Mile oval, with the season finale at Laguna Seca on September 6. For Palou, though, finishing the job sooner would be far sweeter, especially in front of a celebrating American crowd.
If he does become champion, Palou would rank second all-time in IndyCar titles, just one behind Scott Dixon's record of six. He would also surpass Scottish legend Dario Franchitti, who claimed four crowns. This isn't just about numbers—it's about cementing dominance in the modern IndyCar era.
Kirkwood, of course, won't go down without a fight. The young American still has a mathematical chance, albeit slim. The pressure now is firmly on Palou: the favorite who cannot afford to fail on the big stage. Will Washington witness the crowning of a new champion? We'll soon find out.
