Abt Sportsline's second-place finish at the Nürburgring 24 Hours is now under severe threat following post-race technical inspections that uncovered engine performance irregularities. The Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo2, entry #84, driven by Mirko Bortolotti, Patric Niederhauser, and Luca Engstler, is suspected of violating technical regulations regarding maximum permissible power output.
According to dyno test results conducted on Tuesday, the vehicle's engine was found to produce approximately 20 horsepower (HP) above the maximum allowed values. Under GT3 technical regulations, the permissible tolerance is strictly limited to two percent. With an estimated standard power output of 500 HP, this equates to a maximum tolerance of only 10 HP. The finding of an extra 20 HP places the team in breach of the Balance of Performance (BoP) regulations, which are critical for ensuring parity in endurance racing.
Analysis of Technical Inspection Failures in Mechernich
The technical inspection process for the Abt Lamborghini was fraught with complications, starting with a faulty clutch that initially prevented the vehicle from being tested. Following supervised repairs, a secondary measurement was conducted at a test center in Mechernich. However, the test on Tuesday continued until 6 pm due to observed irregularities, and a subsequent measurement on Wednesday also failed to produce a valid result due to a continuing technical defect on the vehicle.

The team's inability to provide a valid measurement across two separate attempts has severely weakened their standing with the technical commissioners. In contrast, a race spokesperson confirmed that five other cars from Aston Martin, BMW, Ford, Mercedes-AMG, and Porsche underwent similar checks and were found to be fully compliant. This indicates that the power surplus in the Lamborghini unit was an isolated incident rather than a systemic issue across other manufacturers.
Championship Implications and Appeal Procedures
The technical commissioners' report has been forwarded to the race commissioners, who will now allow the team to submit a formal response. Until this process is concluded, the race results remain subject to change. Should a disqualification be handed down, Abt Sportsline has a 96-hour window to lodge an appeal with the German Motorsport Federation to contest the decision.
The fallout from a potential disqualification would significantly alter the podium standings. Walkenhorst Motorsport, fielding the Aston Martin Vantage, would move up to second place, while Rowe Racing with the BMW M4 would ascend to third. Such a shift would rewrite the competitive narrative of one of the world's most prestigious endurance events.
Disqualification due to engine overpower is one of the most severe penalties in endurance racing as it directly impacts competitive integrity. In the GT3 category, every single horsepower is critical for straight-line speed and corner-exit acceleration. An extra 20 HP provides an unfair competitive advantage that could technically alter the entire race outcome, particularly regarding fuel management and average lap speeds across the complex Nürburgring circuit.
