Oscar Piastri has described his Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix as “painful” after finishing sixth, 32 seconds behind McLaren team-mate Lando Norris, who claimed a clinical victory at Zandvoort.
The Australian started from the second row and briefly looked competitive, overtaking George Russell and Charles Leclerc after the red-flag restart. However, his race unravelled as strategy calls went against him.
A slow first pit stop cost him track position, and a second stint on hard tyres proved disastrous. “The idea was to start on hards and go to the end, but it became clear quickly that they weren't great,” Piastri admitted.
He explained that the degradation on the first set was manageable, but the second set lost grip after just five laps. “I completely ran out of front tyres. There's not one clear issue; the stint was just very tricky.”
Piastri also mentioned a moment when Russell's power unit issue occurred, but he couldn't capitalise. “After that, it went downhill,” he said.
Despite the setback, McLaren remains strong in the constructors' championship, but Piastri knows he must improve to challenge for the drivers' title.
