Sebastien Ogier will etch his name deeper into the WRC history books this weekend. The Toyota driver is set to make his 213th WRC start at Rally Chile, equaling the record currently held by Jari-Matti Latvala. That record will fully belong to Ogier three weeks later when he lines up for Rally Sardinia.
Latvala, now Toyota's team principal, has been the series' most experienced driver with 213 starts. But that feat will soon be surpassed by his former team-mate. Ogier, 42, has confirmed he will contest every remaining round this season, including Sardinia, whose entry list has yet to be published.
Even with that milestone, Ogier won't yet become the most experienced competitor in WRC history, as three co-drivers still stand ahead of him. Spanish veteran Marc Marti leads with 222 starts, followed by Miikka Anttila (220) and Elfyn Evans's trusted co-driver Scott Martin (213). It's a reminder that such records are often built on enduring partnerships.
Ogier has yet to decide whether he'll continue beyond this season. After returning to part-time duty with Toyota in recent years, he still clinched a ninth world title last season despite missing three rounds. This year, however, a repeat looks unlikely as he sits sixth in the standings, 68 points behind leader Evans.
Rally Chile kicks off with Thursday's shakedown, and fans will be watching closely as Ogier takes another step toward an unprecedented milestone.
