Pato O'Ward will start from pole for the first race of IndyCar's double-header weekend at the Milwaukee Mile, despite qualifying only fourth. Grid penalties for other drivers promoted him to the front.
For the second race, Alex Palou earned his eighth pole of the year with a lap of 22.1915 seconds at an average speed of 164.658 mph, edging O'Ward by just 0.0003 seconds to deny him a double pole.
Qualifying at the historic Milwaukee Mile used a single-run format, setting the grid for both races. Palou was among several drivers handed grid penalties for Race 1, dropping him from second to 10th.

No incidents marred the session, with all drivers staying out of the wall, much to the relief of teams who avoided a scramble ahead of this afternoon's race.
The first race of the weekend goes green Saturday at 1:30 PM CT, with the second on Sunday at noon.
