Nyck de Vries Wins Tokyo as Formula E Title Goes to London

Nyck de Vries won the second race of the 2026 Tokyo E-Prix after changing track conditions and another tyre-pressure gamble reshaped the Formula E order.

Rain before the race forced drivers to choose between wet, dry and intermediate tyre-pressure settings. As the circuit gradually dried, those who gambled on a dry or intermediate configuration were able to charge through the field.

De Vries made the most effective use of the changing conditions and secured his second victory of the season. The contest followed a similar pattern to the second Shanghai race, where track evolution also produced major changes in competitive order.

Nick Cassidy finished second and delivered an important result for Citroen during a weekend held following the death of team principal Cyril Blais. Cassidy remained among the leading group as strategy and conditions continued to evolve.

The biggest championship shift came from Jake Dennis. Starting from 18th, Dennis also committed to the tyre-pressure gamble and climbed through the field to claim third place and take the championship lead.

A red flag was shown with two laps remaining following a multi-car collision. The race restarted for a final one-lap sprint, but de Vries retained control without a major change at the front.

Reigning champion Oliver Rowland used an intermediate set-up and finished fourth, while Jean-Eric Vergne completed the top five. Mitch Evans and Pascal Wehrlein endured damaging races in 15th and 17th respectively.

The results dropped Evans and Wehrlein to second and third in the standings as Dennis moved into first place. The 2026 Formula E championship will now be decided at the season finale in London.
